Convert DVD-R back to MPEG2?

I'm in a pickle. I burned a DVD-R for testing on my DVD player just prior to having a hard drive crash, where I lost all my source files and MPEG2 renders. How should I bring the renders back onto the computer in MPEG2 or DV form from the DVD? Most of the tools out there are geared toward ripping copy-protected DVDs (which DVD-R doesn't require) and converting the files to Divx or VCD format (which I don't want).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks--

Have you tried simply copying the .VOB file(s) into a folder, for example My Documents, and renaming it to .MPG ?

You could go through the process above but instead of doing the last process shown go to your MPEG-2 settings of choice rather than the VCD ones shown.

This works? Have you tried it? I don't have access to the computer now, but you have me intrigued. Seems too easy.

Thanks. Actually I ended up using the second and third steps in this tutorial. Worked like a charm, and I'm very impressed with the results. It did require recompressing the footage to MPEG2 again, but at 6Mbit average 2-pass VBR, it's hardly noticeable, and not a bad concession to getting the footage back.

If anyone tries this, the one problem I had was was with the audio from the menus. When you're selecting the portion of your VOB file from within DVD2AVI, be sure to omit menus or the WAV file that gets exported will not sync up with your video.

Sefy's Ultimate Newbie DVD Conversion Guide v2.0 works for most copy-protected DVDs, but if yours is home-brewed, presumably without copy protection, then simply renaming the .VOB to .MPG should work. Just first go into (My Documents)/Tools/Folder Options/View and make sure the box for "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked, so you can actually see the file extensions so as to be able to rename them.
