Convert footage audio from mono to 2-chan in Vegas

For some reason that I can't understand, some of the audio captured with my video camera was imported into Vegas Movie Studio Platinum as mono instead of stereo.

Is there a way within VMS to convert this to use both channels? I realize it won't be stereo, but that's OK - I just want to use both speakers.

I don't see where to do this in the audio effects from within Vegas MS.

It's an .m2t file since I have a Canon HDV video camera and when I tell VMS to open the audio in an external application, it complains that it's an incompatible format.

For audio editing programs, I have the crippled trial version of Acid that came with Vegas (I think), Cakewalk Music Creator and Audacity.

I was looking in the non-realtime effects - but didn't know if any of those would work. Tried a few and coudn't find one that did the job.

I did find where I can combine the channels by right clicking the audio and choosing the combine option. I did that and it worked OK.

A mono file will by default be played back through both left and right channels. You shouldn't have to do anything at all.

From your description it sounds like you have a stereo file that is silent in one channel, rather than a mono file. The fix you found will work. Better yet would be to choose Left only or Right only, depending on which channel has the audio.

I would guess that the root cause of the problem is in the camcorder and occurred while recording. Perhaps you had a loose mic connection.

M2T files are always stereo. If Vegas doesn't see them as such, it's a bug.
