Irfanview is a good graphic file program and is free. It will do batch converts.

You can make a droplet in ImageReady or PhotoShop. Then you just drag and drop your 500 PNGs on the droplet.

I use it all the time as my primary still image, wav, and MP3 viewer. It opens quick, can easily rename and/or convert lots of files, contains no spyware/market ware crap, etc.

Paint Shop Pro also does batch conversions...and does it nicely and easily.

Well I don't know how many linux users there are here, probably none, but linux can do this from the command line using ImageMagick convert command. Great powerful software. I use linux to do all my batch conversions. I guess I'm showing my geekiness :)
