It looks like the screens they used in "earth the final conflict" and "minority report" among many other sci-fi shows. Can you imagine making and laying out a video composite in this baby!! :)

Don't think it could get much better unless you were standing in a 3D representation.

I WANT ONE!!!

The YouTube site is down right now. But I remember watching Tom Cruise move around image files in Minority Report. I remember thinking it might be cool to edit in a similar fashion.

Youtube is still down. But I'm not sure I would want such a screen. I think it might seem cool at first, but wear after a while as a gimmick. I hope it isn't transparent like the ones in MR either! The last thing I want is to have the view from beind the monitor interfering with my judgement of the video quality!

Also, I don't think the accuracy of your fingers (being blunt edged) is as accurate as a fine mouse pointer.

The other thing is ergonomics. Given the distance of most monitors from your sitting position, do you want to be reaching for the monitor over your desk all the time, or sat with your face right up against the monitor to be close enough to operate as a touch screen? I know Walter Murch suggests standing up during editing, but after long hours that would be fatiguing.

How about this for an idea: Have the "screen" inset INTO your desk! So you are kinda looking down on it. Could even "rake" it a slight angle. Bit like a sound mixing desk? Woahhh .. . now THAT wold be real Kool!

So where would you put your coffee cup Grazie?

I can't answer for Grazie but an IV drip would work for me :-)

IV coffee works fine for me :)

I sat through a one on one demo of Digital Fusion with a guy using a Wacom touch screen, more like watching a conductor at work.

They used to have that stuff in those round telesopic tubes when you rotate it and the different shapes would fastenate the kids.

Great minds really do think alike!

I once mocked up a computer desk with the screen embedded flat as part of the literal desktop. The problem proved to be damage to the screen. I then hooked the monitor under a glass desktop for protection and had reflection problems but someone needs experiment more with this as I do think there is some possibility. Of course now we have bigger screens hanging them on the wall is the way things will probably go.

You can find those in computer museums. Used to be done with a CRT at a 45 deg. angle below a glass-covered cutout in a desk. Never caught on though.

I think the way to work "manually" with images is very practical for certain applications though.

In fact, didn't we hear about such a device (albeit at lower resolution) in this forum a year or two ago? Something audio-related.

Apple filled a patent for a multitouch technology but it actually has nothing to do with this demo. This demo requires back projection and cameras, the setup is quite big. Apple's technology will probably look more like this : http://www.jazzmutant.com

Check out Inition for some very cool tools that are available right now. Imagine editing in a 3D workspace :-)
