Thanks Bob, and Bill over at that other place has said that if I were using my Cineform NEO-HD then this problem would not exist as such. So I'll be doing that before I post anything again.

As far as I'm aware there's no 7.5 IRE setup in NTSC digital video.
I recall some digital scopes will predict the analog output and be able to give a display with 7.5 IRE setup. This is what I remember of a Tektronix model I played with.

Connecting a hardware waveform monitor to the composite output of the EX1 shows no superwhites.

The digital signal recorded by the EX1 definitely looks like they contain superwhites (of a clip I downloaded). Maybe the EX1 does something to the analog output (e.g. clip values), the footage doesn't contain superwhites, or the camera settings were changed.

All values per channel from 0 to 255 are 'legal'
Not for all codecs :(

It depends on the codec.

A useful discussion. In my quick note I see I should have said I was referring to Vegas waveform display not histogram.
