copy and paste project don't work?

I had done a 28 min project; I'd like to separate it into 3 projects, so that I get smoother in rendering the file( I think so). The problem is I tried to copy a part then paste it to a new project it simply don't work, can someone tell me am I doing the right way? cheers.

1) Try rendering the entire thing first. If you experience problems with this due to the duration of the project, continue to step 2.

2) Rather than copying/pasting sections of the project into new project files, render the project in segments. Create a loop region over one segment of the project, Render Loop region only. Then create a loop region over a new segment of the project and render, etc.

Open Vegas TWICE. Then copy from one instance of Vegas to the other.
