Copy Audio Track Without Attached Video Track

I have a video track with an attached audio track. I am trying to copy a portion of the audio track and paste it somewhere else on the timeline.

Everytime I select the audio track and do a copy then paste operation, I get the attached portion of the video track as well as the audio.

Is there any way to isolate the audio track so that only the audio copies and not the attached video?

Audio and Video from the same source are normally grouped together, so that any action on one (move, trim, copy, delete, etc.) is performed on both.

Up in the toolbar, about 3/4ths of the way over to the right, there's an icon that looks like an unlocked padlock with four little green squares behind it. Hover over it and it should say "Ignore Event Grouping". Click it to enable it (momentarily).

Now you can click on the audio and "copy" it, then go where you want to paste it. You should get just the audio.

Go go back and disable "Ignore Event Grouping". Otherwise, when you start moving events around on the timeline, you end up moving just the audio or just the video and getting them out of synch. (If you do happen to do that, just right-click on the audio and select "Synchronize" > "By Moving" and Vegas will put them back in line with each other.
