Copy + Pasting events takes 30s minimum

Blurmo wrote on 1/3/2025, 7:20 PM

I recently made the jump up to VP21, and I'm in love with so many features except one.

There have been many helpful improvements to my workflow, especially when comparing the functionality of Vegas Pro 16 to Vegas Pro 21. It's been fantastic, but I've reached a treacherous roadblock in my timeline.

To preface, I deal with highly resource-intensive projects (part of the reason I'm on VP21 now...), and typically, I don't have a bad time with simple commands like copying + pasting. However, when comparing 16 to 21, you'd think that given the major differences between how the two versions handle commands, I would have zero complaints... Not for copy + paste.

I rely heavily on copy + pasting due to the context of said project. There are many recurring jokes and such, and lots of needs for copying + pasting. As much as I'd love to create some FX packs to slap onto the re-imported baked media that I want to copy and then paste, this would be a significant inconvenience considering how simple copying + pasting SHOULD be for this beast. I'm being greeted with AI smart masks, incredibly smooth timeline navigation, and things that would've sent VP16 into a permanent spinning circle.

With that being said, why is copy + paste such a tedious task for this program? Does this have to do with the cache?

Please let me know. Thank you!

@Blurmo Hi, you don't actually say what is wrong with Copy&Paste or what you're copying & pasting?

It's hard to mention what I'm copying and pasting when the answer is any given event in the timeline. It can be an audio file, standstill PNG, video, etc. Any event in this timeline, when copied and then pasted, will proceed to take a few millenia to do. I'm stuck pasting for ~20-45s as I'm typing this.

I should also mention that this project has thousands of cuts, but I haven't noticed a significant difference in the speed at which an event is copied and pasted until recently.

@Blurmo Ok, replicating a big project isn't easy, I personally have no problem with C&P but someone might have a more solid answer, Would you say it's an accumulation problem that gets worse over time? Some people have reported an increase in memory usage that grows to a point where the software/PC becomes hard to work with.. 🤷‍♂️

PS. I have 256GB of RAM, some fx's can increase RAM usage to 150GB 😮😂

@Gid I would love to agree that an accumulation or a compound effect of copying and pasting several VFX-heavy events could lead to this issue; However, that cannot be the case. I apologize for not mentioning this in my original post; it completely slipped my mind. After roughly 3/4 successful actions of pasting the SAME event - My delays immediately dissolve into a mere instant after its 4th/5th repetition. That's part of the reason why I'm here, as I've never encountered this behavior on VP before recently.

Thank you for your insight, regardless of the solution, though. Much appreciated!

P.S: I'm over the moon that most of my commonly used FXs are standard Sapphire plugins.. (I'm sure the name may give that away... God bless you, BlurMoCurves)

Are you leaving VEGAS and then coming back to VEGAS? If yes, try Options - Preferences - and uncheck "Close media when not the active application".

Are you moving to different places on the timeline? Perhaps VEGAS is trying to refresh the thumbnails in the preview.

Personally, in all of my edits Copy/Paste has been immediate in 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22.

Blurmo wrote on 1/4/2025, 12:54 PM

@jetdv I absolutely love the option to uncheck that 'Close Media' setting, and that has been unchecked for many months. Also, I had a theory it could've been due to navigating throughout the timeline, as Vegas typically loads chunks of the timeline as you interact more and more with a section. To combat this theory, I tested a rendered-out version of whatever I was attempting to copy + paste; However, I was left with the same results as any other event despite rendering it and attempting the same actions.

Any chance you have any heic apple images in there? they did the same thing when inserting to my timeline. I would add a few images at the same time and Vegas Pro 22 194 just hung 'forever'.

I finally gave up and converted all the heic content into jpg and Vegas was Vegas again. I have a thread here about it, but there was no proper solution. It only takes a few of those images and thing hangs.

Just an idea to look for.

Cheers, Pete
