COPYING FILES TO EXTERNAL DRIVES

I am experiencing a problem copying files from an internal drive to an external drive using MS Plat 9.0.
Heretofore I have been able to transfer files to an external drive for editing on another computer, but this week I am getting this message in a window with the white X inside of the red circle. (error )

"Cannot copy (File name) there is not enopugh free disc space. Delete one or more files to free disc space and then try again....etc.)

The IDE has 22 G free and the external has 728 G free. Does anyone know what is going on here?
When I try to capture the footage on the external hard drive I get an increasing amount of dropped frames that I never used to get as well. That's why I was trying to capture on the internal drive and then move it to the external drive to go the the edit computer.

Thanks
John

Why are you doing it that way? Did you try using Windows Explorer instead?

Teach me this shortcut to success. I am always ready to do things a better way.
Presently,
I use my Canopus capture device to download footage onto one of my computers as I do other work on my main computer.

When the download is complete I pull the external drive from the one computer and connect it to the Main computer where I do the editing. (Multi-tasking)

If there is a better way, please enlighten me.
I have downloaded footage to an external drive in the past, but for some reason I am having a problem and can't get the external drive to "receive" the download frrom the camera. I have to put it into an Internal drive or I experience a lot of dropped frames. That's where the new issue comes in that won't let me "copy" and Paste" the footage onto an external so I can put it in the main computer. If I could solve that problem I think I would be fine. I don't relish the idea of having to download onto the main computer to get the footage. It really shuts me down to one task at a time to do that.

At any rate, Please continue with your information.

Thanks
John

I always move files using the drag and drop method in Windows Explorer.

Moving/Copying files with drag and drop method.

When you drag a file from a folder in one hard drive (internal) to another hard drive (external), the original file stays on the internal hard drive and you have to delete it afterwards.

You can modify that behavior by holding the Shift key down. This will move the files rather than copy them. Personally, i think this is a stupid idea. I won't delete the original files from the first drive until i've verified that i can read them on the other computer from the other drive.

I tried the drag and drop method from IDE to external and I still get the error message that I don't have enough disc space. I think there is something else going on withthe files. I am going to try to down load again, but I think I will get the dropped frames problem I had before.

Does anyone have any suggestions about capturing to an external hard drive? I have done it in the past without a hitch (USB port in the back of the computer) but this time I got dropped frames like crazy.
Thanks for the sugestions guys.
