Correct cropping ?

Hi all,

What is the correct way to crop DV material that is going to be encoded for the web (WM, Real, etc)? I want to get keep the aspect ratio of DV PAL, which apparently is 4:3 with pixel aspect ratio 1,0926.

I want to use say 320*240 square pixel in the encoded file. I have tried just to zoom in using the track motion tool but I have a feeling it does not scale properly in the encoded file.

I have some black borders on the right and the left I need to get rid of, so yes I must crop the video.

Set the project properties to the desired output: 320x240 1,0 (Square) PAR.

Place the clip on the timeline and open the Pan/Crop window. Right-mouse-button click in the frame area and choose "Match Output Aspect".

Turn on the "Lock Aspect Ratio" button.

Crop as necessary by dragging the corners of the cropping frame and moving the entire frame around to line up with the image area of your clip.

Thanks,

Will this also work when batch rendering to different 4:3 sizes, say 320*240 and 192*144? Will Vegas automatically crop the 192 *144 size although the project is set to 320*240?

Yes, as long as you keep the same frame aspect ratio. Vegas scales everything to the rendered frame size and ignores project settings while rendering.
