Corrupt File (?!?) - Help!

This post is a duplicate of a VVideo forum post. I put it here in case the Audio group can also give us a clue.

Our thanks to all who assisted with our rendering issue. We have about a dozen projects done in V4, but this is our first in V6. Now that we've dialed in on the process, we've found the real issue with this file.

In project mode, it plays perfectly. It also renders the video-only stream just fine. But, it won't render audio. Except, to the "prerender" avi files. The AC3 render always fails at around 1500 to 1800 frames, which is 53 to 60 seconds into the video. Tried the separate-stream mpeg render also (m2v, mva?), failed at the same spot. (Sorry, one of my biggest troubleshooting issues is I have a day job, I'm not in front of the project until I get home).

I've copied the veg file out a bunch of times. Tried deleting all video, no go. Tried deleting audio at the point of failure, no go. Removed the first 75 seconds of everything on the timeline, no go. I had ram in the box with two different clock speeds. changed that, no go. So, what could this be, and does anyone have a suggestion on saving this file?

This project is a deliverable on 12/10 to a banquet group of 200. So while looking for a better solution, here is what I am doing. I am selecting a logical portion of the video (usually based on a song), and selecting Selective Prerender. I do get good avi files that way. At 10 seconds per avi file, I'll end up with about 260 files I intend to string together in a new project. It should work out, I tested it with the first 3 minutes, and got the results we needed. So, second question - if someone has a better way, please let me know.

I tried Render to New Track, but I think the project just overloaded the resources, it crashed at about the 10 minute mark. Our box has decent specs, but I must admit the base is a consumer HP POS that I built up. As soon as we can afford it, we'll get a Boxx box.

My first question is was the project mixed in 5.1 in Vegas?
Reason being that the AC3 isn't necessary for the DVD if it's only a stereo mix.
If you render the video as an MPEG2 with audio embedded does that function?
If so you could source a stereo mix from the embedded audio in the MPEG in DVDA.

As to why it crashes in the render I once had a similar problem and it turned out to be a specific audio file in the Vegas project, in this case it was an music in MP3 format.
I ended up sovling the problem by converting it to WAV in SoundForge and 'replacing' the MP3 in with the WAV in Vegas. This didn't require manual editing as I selected the file in Vegas then chose the option of open in SoundForge (generically Open in Audio Editor) converted the file with a "Save as" to a 48Khz wav. Then back in Vegas chose original MP3 in the Project Media list right clicked and selected 'Replace' and navigated to where the new wav file was saved and selected it.

After doing that i could render my file.

As to why this particular MP3 was causing grief I have no idea and haven't had the problem since.

Hope this is of some help.
