corrupted AVI's - any ideas?

I had some avi files that have been corrupted. It was a project I had done and then needed to go back and change a few things.

When I open the .veg I get an error saying "an error occurred opening the media file".

When I look at the list in the media bin they are there but the open in trimmer option is grayed out and not available.

When I try to drag them to the timeline I get the O with a line through it symbol and cannot insert them.

When I open them in Win Player it tells me the file is corrupt or the player doesn't support the format.

I was able to open them at one time because I edited and rendered the project. The only thing I can think of that may have happened is that I was in Vegas and my computer shut down. Could this have corrupted these avi's?

I thought about recapturing the clips but now I'm having problems with my camera (when it rains it pours, I guess!).

It seems like a lost cause, but any ideas of anything I can try with these files?

TIA

When you right click on the file what does properties tell you

Properties doesn't seem to indicate that anything is wrong. It gives the file size on one file as being just over 4 gb.

If the files have been truncated, they don't seem to be by much.

I don't know the format or layout of an avi file but I wonder if the viewing info of the file is damaged or it has been truncated enough to make it look like an incomplete file to Vegas and WMP, therefore not playable.

Have you tried opening a new project and accessing the files? Darryl

I did - same problem though.

Thanks!

How about Windows Movie Maker? Can it see them?

Are they on an external drive (E?) or something. Could you copy and send them to another location (folder and/or drive) and try to access them from the new copy?

They are not on an external drive.

Haven't tried the other ideas - I'll give that a shot tonight.

Thanks for the ideas!

Is it possible that you installed some incompatible codec? Seems unlikely...but maybe you could re-install Vegas.
