cost of digital editing

Thanks for the replies on my previous inquiry. It was my first work in VV3 and appreciated the help. The project was given to a friend as a gift, but he was wondering what digital editing would cost had he taken it to someone other than a friend. I heard at one time it cost $20.00 - $25.00/minute of finished video. Is this in the ballpark?

More like 20.00-35.00 an HOUR for finished video. In other words, it's rarely edited by the finished minute. If the video takes 10 hours to finish 1 minute, which is very possible, then at 25.00 a finished minute, your friend/you made 5% of minimum wage...

Professional editing in California is going for $60 to $85 an hour depending on equipment and bells and whistles. I charge $60.hr. to edit with VV3.

And depending on your skills. If you are good you can charge more per hour than if you aren't.

Most edit jobs are by the hour worked. A DV bay in this area goes for $75 an hour minimuum with editor. Avid bays are $180 and on-line bays $300. When it comes to wedding videos, that is another story. There are guys in town who are editing from 6 hours of raw wedding video for $300 flat rate. The end result is about 30 minutes long. I think they are nuts, but they are hungry. I get $750 for a 5 minute piece with 3.5 hours on site for the function (about 40 minutes raw). I then slap 10 minutes or more of rough shots on the end. I do not take many jobs like that -- weddings are too much hastle.
