Crappy preview with decklink HD extreme

LongTallTexan wrote on 12/15/2009, 6:38 PM
Just installed it today and the preview is worse then my windows secondary monitor. What gives, thought Vegas and decklink HD extreme were supposed to play nice together. I'm hoping I just don't have the prefrences correct or something. Funny thing is BlackMagic doesn't even show they support Vegas Pro. Would love to hear from someone who has this working well for preview purposes. I'm seeing tons of jaggies. Looks like draft quality regardless the quality setting.

"I'm seeing tons of jaggies"

Don't have the HD Decklink but even on firewire output to a CRT if Vegas does any scaling yes, lots of jaggies. Are you seeing this only where there's motion?
My Standard Def Decklink looks superb however I'm feeding it pixel to pixel.

Well most of my project media is HDV 1080 i with ocasionally some DVD mixed in. I dont see any HDV output settings and the secondary preview doesn't have an upscaling selection. Jaggies are there even when in pause.

I can't be of a whole lot of help as I don't have your exact setup so please take that into account.

What I have seen is this.
I have a 4:3 CRT connected to an A/D converter which in turn is connected via firewire to my Vegas system.
Now if I send 4:3 to the monitor from a 4:3 project it looks perfect as it should. Switch to a 16:9 project and tell Vegas via the External Preview Monitor options to conform to 4:3 I see horrendous jaggies that I do not see on the internal preview or on my LCD when that's the Secondary Preview Device.
If I setup the external preview to send 16:9 to my 4:3 it is perfecto, even though the aspect ratio is wrong there's no jaggies.

Based on this I've concluded that when Vegas conforms what's going to an external monitor to something different to the project settings it does a very bad job of it. This could be what is causing your problem. I would try to create a scenario in which your project and external monitor are the same e.g. both FullHD 1920x1080.

However having said that I'm concerned when you say "I don't see any HDV Outpur Setting", what happens when you select the SDI output as the external preview, is Vegas aware that it's HD?

Sorry I'm not much help and this really needs attention from Vegas support, I do understand your angst though, this is not cheap kit.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I have opened a tech support with Vegas as to proper setup and calibration to use within Vegas9c for preview purposes and will see what they say. I have done the same with Backmagic so we will see the outcome. Thanks, i'll post what info I recieve as I am sure others are curious as to the level of support for this card that is suposadly fully supported by Vegas.
