I am trying to add an MP4 file to my project. As soon as I click on the file (after "add media"), I get the message "Movie Studio Platinum has stopped working". The error messages I get are:

That file has variable framerate, a thing Vegas don't like but with you it is not too much difference so it must play in VMSP 17.

Is your hardware meeting the specs for the program"
What is your hardware?

To look with such a file on our installations you need to upload such a small file to a cloudserver, so we are able to download the original file.
Maybe Handbrake can transfer this type of file to a mp4 with staedy framerate.

This is the file I am trying to import.

That's a transferred file by this website and not an original file.
Not acceptable for trying out.
You have to provide a link to that file placed on a cloudservice

@Ralph-Barlow I've downloaded your file and added it to Movies Studio 17 Platinum with no problem. So, whatever the problem is, it's not the software.

Try doing a full reset and see if that cures it. Hold the Shift and Ctrl keys down whilst double-clicking on the desktop icon. Select Clear cache when prompted. Most custom settings will require re-establishing after this operation.

I had the exact same problem. I would wager that it is the software because I fixed it by disabling the so4 compound reader for AVC by turning the value to 'FALSE' instead of 'TRUE' in SHIFT-CLICK-->Preferences--> Internal menu. The file I disabled is part of MS 17, so therefore the problem is with MS 17 in my opinion.

Of course that didn't fix it from crashing when I try to customize rendering options. That is hopefully going to be dealt with in another thread.
