Crashing when rendering

I have created a 55 minute movie (have done this before) with quite a few still pics and some hd video. I have spent the past 15 hours trying to render the movie, and it crashes every time. Here is the error message I am getting:

1. How do you export? Which codec and which frame size exactly?
2. Do you use any third party filters in your footage?
3. In which part does it crash exactly? Is it the same spot all the time? If yes, what's special of this spot? Maybe a transition?
kjam wrote on 12/28/2007, 8:08 PM
Oh dear...like I said, I am not too familiar with all the terms and am not great at understanding the program itself. Sorry....

Let's see, I think I am trying to render my project as mpeg. I captured the footage from Sony HD camcorder, and used the same settings I always use to capture and render. I used a template that I set up last year when I made my video - This video is very similar. So I'm not sure what I may be doing differently. My first thought was the file was too large (I use quite a few transitions and effects) so I removed some of the clips. I figured I would just make 2 separate movies.

For this I chose render as mpg2 file and the template I use is HDV 1080-60i. I also tried to render as DVD Architect Video Stream. No matter what I try, it crashes immediately. I just get an error that says error occurred during operation, an exception has occurred.
Eugenia wrote on 12/28/2007, 9:37 PM
If it crashes immediately, then file a bug report with Sony. They have email-based support.

The only thing you can do now is start removing stuff from your project one by one to find out what the culprit is: a transition, a scene, a filter...

As for the template you are using, make sure it's an HD or HDV template that corresponds to your new camera.
kjam wrote on 12/29/2007, 7:36 PM
Thanks - I have been over this so many times - I even removed some of the project to see if perhaps I had made it too long. It does crash about 10 seconds into the render.

I made a similar video on the same software using the same camcorder last year. I believe I am using the same settings. Would there be a new "bug" that wasn't there when I made a video previously? Are there new patches or anything since last year that I need to download?

I'd really hate to start over at this point. This lousy 55 min video has taken me 2 weeks to complete. I just can't figure out what the problem could be. I have checked all online help support. Could it be something with a codec that I don't know about? Or could it be the preferences/settings I am using?

I have tried to render to mpeg and avi - neither one of them are working. Is there a way to determine which transitiion/clip might be causing the error? Please help - I appreciate it.
kjam wrote on 12/29/2007, 7:40 PM
ok, I just tried to render only a portion of the video - about 1/2 by highlighting only the portion I want to render. This time I got an error message that memory is low. I checked my system, and it looks like I have tons of memory on my computer open, so I don't know what else to do to try to make more memory available.

Could that be what caused the initial crash?
Eugenia wrote on 12/29/2007, 8:20 PM
When you say that you have tons of memory open, are you talking about storage, or RAM? Check how much RAM you have left, and how much storage. You need quite a bit of both.
kjam wrote on 12/29/2007, 8:36 PM
Thanks for replying so quickly. I don't know the difference between RAM and storage, but when I check my C drive it says I have 164 GB of space left and 63.7 GB used. Is that what you mean? Should I try to start deleting things off of my system?

I didn't have this problem before, but then again, I am using more hd video clips in this project, and I do have some stills that were taken from a digital camera that I think may require more space? Please bear with me, I am learning.

Is it possible in VS7 to only render portions of the video? Is there a way to skip the rendering process altogether?

I'm having a very similar issue with a 24 min vid in full Vegas 8.0 so check my posts there.

Like you, I've done these before so a mystery on this one as I don't know what causes it. I did some other test renders (without transitions and pan/zoom) which worked fine so my PC seems OK.

I was thinking of trying it in MS 6 which I used before buying the full upgrade version to get more tracks etc (I was an old Vegas user) so now I'm sure if it worth the recoding time.

Let's keep each posted on developments. My email is 'scvcc88@yahoo.com'.

Good luck.

How much RAM your PC has? Might be a RAM issue. You have to find someone to find out. Otherwise, right click on the blue START taskbar of windows, select "task manager", click the performance tab and then check the number for "Total Physical Memory".
hackazoid wrote on 12/30/2007, 12:49 AM
I know this is Kjam's thread but I have 2 GB and had put the Task Mgr stats in my Vegas Pro post as I don't know how to interpret them. Also posted my error message which was similar to Kjam's.

One guy did reply that he has 6 GB ( I think only ~3.5 is used by Vista anyway) and still gets a low memory msg from Vegas so maybe it is a bug.

Anyhow, curious if you have ideas from the stats. Thanks.

Maybe try increasing your paging file/s (vertual memory). Also turn off all non-vital background progs.
kjam wrote on 12/30/2007, 4:59 PM
hackazoid: I'm glad to know someone else has a similar issue. I create these movies a couple times per year, and have never had this happen. I did read some of your other threads on the topic, and I'm also going to try some of those suggestions (I will try to render small portions, but this seems like a lot of work when it worked for me in the past). Have you figured out your problem yet?

Eugenia: I checked where you said, and it shows I have total 1037924; available 672588; sys cache 200120 (but these numbers keep changing). Could this be my problem?

laz: you wrote "Maybe try increasing your paging file/s (vertual memory). Also turn off all non-vital background progs". Do you mind telling me how I do this? (like I said, I'm not too computer saavy). I would really appreciate it.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I think there may be hope yet for my project.
hackazoid wrote on 12/30/2007, 8:37 PM
Kjam...

I cobbled something together by breaking it into 3 chunks of 6-10 min. and put them together in DVDA as a play all.

The only way that seemed to work was to reboot and to have nothing else running except task mgr. I could only do one per reboot as if I tried a second render, I got the low memory msg. Even had to reboot multiple times.

I can't but wonder if the version 8 has some bugs in it as I didn't have this issue with longer ones in Vegas 4 or MS6.

I'll send my error msgs to Sony and hope they can work it out as it should not be this hard.

Good luck.
kjam wrote on 12/30/2007, 8:49 PM
You're right hackazoid - it should not be this hard. Especially when I have used this program numerous times and never had issues like this. I have tried now at least 30 times to just go into my project and delete most of the video to try to render it in chunks (as was suggested to you in your other thread). For some reason, it locks up right away when I choose a portion and hit delete - it says "program not responding".

Do you use hd video in your project? It seems it slows more when it gets to those segments in my project. Also, I am wondering if there isn't something in the settings under preferences I should change. Do you understand anything about the codecs? Currently the box for blocking 3rd party codecs is checked, and the use microsoft DV codec is not. I am wondering if those should be changed? Although I haven't changed any settings from the last time I made a movie, so I don't understand why this time I have having so many problems.

Is there possibly an update that may need to be installed?
laz wrote on 12/31/2007, 2:16 AM
To increase paging go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Advanced/Vertual Memory, and change max to 3 times your ram.

To turn off b/g progs type into Run, msconfig, and go to startup and untick all the things which aren't vital and reboot.
kjam wrote on 1/2/2008, 7:24 PM
Thanks laz.
I did all of this and still crashing. I even tried to render without the audio (I delete the original audio and replace with music) thinking that may be the problem - that didn't work either.

I did have a problem with viruses getting into my computer. I have pretty much taken care of that problem (I think). Does anyone know if that could be the problem?

Also, I emailed Sony on Monday, and still no response. How long do they take to get back to you?
GBR wrote on 1/3/2008, 2:25 AM
I don't know if this will help, but have you tried disabling your anti virus software? Make sure you are not on line when performing this operation.

I am using Trend Micro Internet Security and the latest version identifies DVDA as a high risk program and will not let me use it. Fortunately, I also have Nero software and can take the rendered files from Vegas MSP and then burn a DVD with Nero.

Good luck!
kjam wrote on 1/3/2008, 3:09 PM
GBR:
I hope you are onto something. I too have TrendMicro installed on my system. I never thought that would cause a problem. Would hidden viruses also maybe cause this? Should I just try to remove trend micro and try again? I did not have this on my system last year when I made a video without these issues.

Do you know how I find a hidden virus that keeps popping up that I can't get rid of? This problem did not start to happen until I got a bunch of viruses on my system last week now that I think about it.
GBR wrote on 1/3/2008, 7:55 PM
kjam,

I don't think you need to remove trend micro, just go into the various control tabs and disable the functions before attempting to render again. But make sure you are not connected to the Internet with trend disabled.

It just seems that the trend micro system designers have made it a bit too fail safe and any program that looks in any way "suspicious" is disallowed.

I would be interested to hear if this helps resolve the problem.

Good luck!

Download and run these two programs: Ad-Aware 2007 Free and Spybot Search & Destroy

I run both about once a month.

btw, do a Start > Run > dxdiag and post your system specs. (System tab - system model, processor, memory, DirectX version - Display tab - name)
kjam wrote on 1/5/2008, 11:19 AM
I have ad-aware and spybot on my system. I have run both several times - doesn't seem to help though.

Here are the system specs:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: GATEWA
System Model: GT5012
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1014MB RAM
Page File: 1633MB used, 805MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode

Is anything wrong here that I could fix?

Also I have done several things to my project to find the error. I have made separate videos and tried rendering each separately - all of them crash. I have also tried to render a little selection in the project and still get a crash. I am at a loss.....I appreciate any kind responses.
Thank you.

I think I see your problem. JK

I did a Google search on your exception error and came up with THIS. I don't know if it will help but it sure sounds similar.

For kicks and giggles, why don't you download a trial version of VMS 8 and give it a go with your project, nothing to lose. Be sure to do a Save As first in 7 so you don't loose your project. v8 might handle your m2t files better.

BTW, don't know if it will help, but you could schedule a check disk to run on your C drive and restart your PC. My Computer > Disk Management > right click on drive > Properties > Tools > Check Now > Auto Fix > Start then restart your PC.

Just in case you've still got nasties on your system it's best to run an online scan as some viruses can disable onbaord av's:

Trend Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

and the best free anti-malaware is Super AntiSpyware

I'm running Win 2000 sp4 and an AMD 2600 with 2 G RAM, but it runs like I only have 512 RAM. Can you guide me through to where I can reset my Virtual Memory to three timees the size of RAM that I have? I think that's why I'm stopping during playback on a simple 140 picture (JPG file)project
