Create Subclip and get rid of the original??

Vegas Pro 8c. Have a 300 meg clip and only want 50 megs from it. Can I somehow create a subclip or new clip containing only the 50 megs, save it and then delete the original monster? I know,, the hard way is to go back and find the original monster and just capture the 50 megs I want. But there oughta be a way to just create a new clip from the old.

You can put the original clip on the timline and render just the part you want as a new clip, then the original may safely be discarded.

"i don't think you can deleat the original clip."

And why not?

If done a Peter states and RENDER out the section wanted then it in itself becomes it's own clip. You're free to delete the original at will. I do it all the time.

as b3t says, as long as you've render out to a new track or whatever, then there's no problem deleting the old file (of course, that is until you realised that you missed that one shot ;-P).

but i agree with the initial sentiment - it would be great if creating a sub-clip did exactly that - create an independent clip divorced from the original.

Actually there already is a procedure for producing an independent smaller file, which is to render that section to a new file. There's no need for the subclip to do this. Besides, you wouldn't want to wait for the rendering process and use up all the drive space for this whenever you're using the subclip function for it's intended purpose.

For just this sort of thing I use Video Splitter from boilsoft.

Hey Blink3,

I actually posted my comment at the same time Pete did, and I didn't see his post or was I commenting on it. What you and he said is true.

hi chein,

i realise i can do that (and often do), but when i have an hour tape in the trimmer window and want to simply cut it up into unique sub clips it means i still have the whole hour.

i'd be happy enough to be given an option to render ALL sub clips at some stage.

mmm, could i do this with 'regions' and batch render?

ah, life is full of unanswered questions,
