crisp titling on youtube

Hey guys, this might be the wrong place to ask this, but I'm sure some of you guys may have encountered this before. My friend is trying to upload some "videos" to youtube, essentially just a jpg/png displayed for a long amount of time, but the titling in his images end up blurry.

Is there a recommended way to get cleaner looking titling on youtube?

Here's an example of his titling

Here's an example of what he's looking for

Thanks in advance,

-Eric

I may be wrong, but my first impression is that it's the compression used on the video. Either how you compressed it, or how YouTube compressed it. Basically, the compression is too much and causes the blurring.

The nice one was likely shot, edited and uploaded in progressive mode.

YouTube now supports 1920x960. Probably not a bad idea to master and upload at that resolution.
Your friends video seems to have been mastered at quite low resolution, looking at it in HQ doesn't help so I suspect that's the problem. Best results seem to come from high resolution low detail video. Static graphics should be able to be compressed an incredible amount and still look good.

I agree with Bob, go with 1920x960 and get a nice big graphic in YouTube's HD mode. You may also get more hits from people specifically searching HD videos.

Another possibility is that his bitrate was too low. As the video is static it shouldn't need much bitrate to make it clear, but if I was uploading it I would probably just go over the top to make sure and give it 2 Mbps.

I am wondering if youtube changed their player recently? 1920x960 has black bars on all 4 sides unless its played in a new window or embedded. I tried 1920x1080 and there are black side bars but no bars on the top and bottom.
