Crop Entire Video, How?

donnell wrote on 11/20/2004, 6:43 AM
I'm demo-ing Vegas 5. I want to learn how to perform a simple task. I have a 720x480 video that I want to crop to 400x400 only leaving the center of the original image in the video and cutting out the edges which have artifacts. I've been trying to work with the Eventpan/crop tool but it doesn't seem very intuitive. Is this the right tools for cropping an entire video? Is there a selection tool where I can draw out the border to crop the entire video?

Thanks - D

or you can use the track motion tool.
Here's what i'd reccomend: save a PNG at full size (best, full, then click the disk icon above the preview window). Take that into a photo program (ie photoshop). Next, mark where you want the crop to be (with a bright red or something). Save & bring that pic into Vegas. Put it on a track. Now, pan/crop or track motion that clip until you have the crop markers where you want. If you did track motion then you just need to put the video clip on that track & you're all set. IF you did pan/crop then copy/paste the keyframe into the first frame (in pan/crop) of your video.

Easy as goat pie. :)

i would have just edited the whole video - as many tracks as you want .. etc etc, all at full frame .

.. frameserve it out of vegas into another vegas (or another app) and crop the whole thing and render it ...

with vegas you get used ot having many of them open at once (i.e. - there is your nested timelines) ....

Change the video frame size directly in the project settings...I have done just that to create a vid from which I created a gif...(I changed the frame size to 125x100)

that would just resize everything -- he wants to crop it ..

Cookie Cutter wont give 400 x 400 . .I'm wrong . . duoh . . .

it would also leave you with borders ....

i think he wants to end up with a 400x400 video -- thats why i suggested the method i did above ..

super fast easy and simple ..

The Border you can rid of .. I'd forgtten the resize option .. me bad . .and yes an extra track with a "window" is a way. The other thought was still to use Cookie Cutter on a Solid colour on track one, making a once shot window THEN Pan/Crop trak one to change to 400X400 . .yeah? No need to go outside Vegas . . I was halfway there but didn't climb the rest of the hill . . I think I get the Prize !

Grazie

I have Vegas 4.0 currently for only one purpose--to trim the edges of my digitalized video of the white "noise," especially noticable when the original is a VHS tape. All I got with the software was a 122 page guide that neither mentioned "crop" nor "pan" in the index.

Given the approaching Christmas season which fills most good souls with cheer and generosity, would someone please either give me step-by-step instructions on doing this or if you know of a tutorial on the web you can send me too, I'd be eternally grateful.

http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/tutorials/pan-crop.htm is a very old tutorial on pan/crop...but it's up there. :-)
There are a couple others on the VASST site, www.vasst.com/login.htm will get you there.

I may have misunderstood what you are doing here...but to me this looks pretty simple.

If you will end up with video that is going to be 400x400 pixels I would HAVE to assume this video is not going to end up on TV? You are likely going to be rendering this project to some format for display on a PC right?

So... then what I would do is set your project properties (File-Properties) to the multimedia format and set the height/width to 400x400.

At this point your video will now be re-sized to fit within that format.

Now you can use the pan/crop tool to zoom in to the section that you want to keep (note you must select "Match Output Aspect Ratio" for each cllip also.

If your video is in multiple pieces (events) on the timeline then you will have to apply the above pan/crop settings to every video event on your timeline. Just copy the first event and then select all of the other events (right click on the first of these events and <select events to end>) and then right click the first of the events again and select <paste event attributes>.
