I've been here too. If I've read yo correctly, using of PiP and Pan/Crop combos will/has driven you bonkers.

If available to you please try Bezier Curve masking. In Bezier Masking to can control and dictrate exactly the area you wish to have visible; feather any "sharp" edges; increase or reduce the size of the feathering; move the masking according to a key-frame time-line!; draw EXACTLY what shape you want and stay sane!

Don't try another package until you've played with Bezier . .

Which version of Vegas do you have?

wow! thanks for your reponse. I'm very happy to hear this should-be-simple move drives others bonkers too. I'm running the full version of 6 and just looked at your Bezier suggestion and I'm amazed how complecated something that should be so simple is for this! I have just started in Preimer yesterday, and while trying to accomplish this after an hour of fiddling in Vegas, I was able to easily make the effect I wanted in less than an hour, not only making the effect in that time, but digitizing video, and literally beginning in Premiere! I used to think Vegas was very user friendly, but this is another reason I no longer think so. I'm totally amazed how difficult some things are that are so easy in other applications. I know it works both ways. I've been an Avid editor for 7 years now as well, and somethings are much easier in Vegas, while others are easier in Avid. I think I'm going to do this section of my project in Premiere. It's layed out so logical and simple, and should be this complicated proceedure. Thanks much for your insights.

Here's another cropping suggestion.
While in the Pan/Crop window, go to Source - Maintain aspect ratio and set this to No.
