Is there a way to zoom in to crop a vertical still image when added to a project so that the resulting cropped photo fills the entire frame like a horizontal image? Everytime I zoom and crop, the image still appears vertical with framing left and right.
Click the Track Motion icon on the track that you want to zoom on.
Unclick the 5th icon down "Lock Aspect Ratio". This should allow you to vary the size and shape you require.
Also, when you create the original still graphic, I'd recommend making the width at least 655 pixels or greater so that when you zoom into it, the image will remain sharp and unpixelated. The height will take care of itself.
As others have pointed out, you can sometimes zoom in either in VV3 or when scanning, but the real answer is 'no'.
The TV screen is always 4 times wide by 3 times high, so if you're trying to show a picture that's tall and skinny you're going to have to show it with borders.
FWIW, VV3 makes it very easy to add a background other than black - either a still or a moving loop.
Another thing I've seen done (on History and Discover, PBS) and tried on my home vids, is to set the size of the pan/crop box to the width of the still and then pan vertically up or down during the still image duration, ending on what you want the audience to focus on. I saw this effect recently on a PBS Ansel Adams special - there were many portrait-oriented stills, that (during the 5-8 second still image duration) started near the bottom, and panned upward ending on the upper half or so of the still - It was a nice effect.
