Curious to know about audio hardware

I am curious about what audio hardware the general
population is using with software tools such as Vegas. What
company seems to make a good sound card that lets you take
advantage of ALL the features of Vegas. Right now I'm using
a Creative Labs Live Platinum. Is a iece of hardware such as
that worthy of Vegas? Should I be looking into getting more
professional audio hardware for my PC to interface with my
sound equipment?

Clueless new guy on the audio front....

What I would do is check out what hardware is on the market that
works on Wavedriver and ASIO or ASIO 2. Second, what you can afford
and Third, choose a reputable company, something that will not be
outdated or discontinued two weeks from now. Also, look into
compatability with other software. You might want to look at a system
that will grow or expand with your needs. Look at some of the
problems that other people are having with their hardware. Ask other
users about their gear, its your money buy what you want and HAVE FUN.

The ASIO stuff is meant for a Mac - it won't help you with most of
the WIndows apps. (ASIO does run on Windows but a good wave driver
does better, in my experience on Sonic Foundry and CAkewalk products)

If you just a need a few channels the SB Live should be OK.

Just my opinion,
Mark

I recommend Echo's line of audio cards for the pc. They sound great,
are highly stable and are quite affordable. They are also top notch
when it comes to upgrading drivers.

ASIO should only be an issue if you plan on using a program like
Cubase (which I recommend against, awful program). Vegas uses directx
and standard windows conventions.

Check out the new Card Delux from Digital Audio Labs. I've done
extensive comparisons between existing A/D and D/A hardware and
they are as good as multi-thousand dollar Apogee gear (in terms of
SNR etc.)

I definitely have some input on this front. I'd like to go along with
the Digital Audio Labs CardDeluxe recommendation. I bought one,
updated the firmware and the driver, and it has be WONDERFUL ever
since. If you have the analog hardware to support balanced I/O you'll
love it. I get a great S/N ratio out of the whole system.
Only drawback of the CardDeluxe is that it's stereo in/out, so if
you're trying to do multi-channel stuff you'll want something
different.
I would AVOID the MOTU 1224 at all costs, at least on the PC
platform. Seems their Windows driver are really crappy. I tried to
record a band with Vegas Pro and a MOTU 1224 and it was a nightmare.
We finally replaced it with the Aardvark Aark 24, and as much as the
Aark 24 looks el-cheapo, it really performs. Saved my butt on that
recording deal. So, that's my two cents. Good luck, research a lot,
and only buy from someone who accepts returns!
