To all those who tried and helped me, thank you for your response. It is fixed!!!!. As suggested, I went into Preferences-Audio Device-Audio Device Type and changed the setting from Microsoft Sound Mapper to Windows Classic Wave Driver and bingo.Who would have thought that. For all those with the same problem this might be the answer.
