cursor position jump by entering value

i just completed a slideshow and had the ruler set to "time". just by playing around, i figured out how to make the cursor jump back 2 seconds by entering "-2" in the cursor position box. this was great for doing transitions.

now, i'm editing a video and have the ruler set to "SMPTE Drop (29.97 ftp)". if i enter "-2" in the cursor position box, it jumps back 2 frames, not seconds. any ideas on how to make to jump back 2 seconds?

Yes, if you just enter "-2" it will jump back 2 of whatever the current smallest unit is.

So in Time mode (where the smallest unit is the second) it will jump back 2 seconds. But in Time & Frames mode, or any of the SMPTE modes which also work in time and frames, the smallest unit is the frame so it jumps back 2 frames.

If you want to jump back by 2 seconds in one of the Time & Frames modes (including all the SMPTE modes) you need to enter "-2.0" which it interprets as "jump back 0 of the smallest units and 2 of the next smallest units, i.e. 2 seconds and 0 frames.

It will also work if you enter "-2:0" but (because the decimal point is available on the numeric keypad and the colon isn't) I find it easier to use the "." to separate the seconds from the frames rather than the ":" which is probably more "correct" - fortunately Vegas knows what you mean whichever one you use.

Of course entering "+2.0" will move you forward two frames similarly. And if you want to move further than a few seconds you can do it by entering for example "+1.2.0" to move forward by one minute, two seconds and no frames.

And just to complete the picture, entering "2.5.0" (i.e. without either a plus or a minus in front) will take you directly to the 2 minutes, 5 seconds and 0 frames point.
