Cutting and pasting between projects

vegasnewbie wrote on 1/25/2004, 8:09 PM
I am working on two projects, A and B. When completing Project B, I decided I would like to add into this project an edited section from Project A. However, I found that Vegas would not let me copy some video from Project A and paste it into Project B. I am not sure why this is because the same source avi files were used in both projects.

Can anyone tell me a way of adding an edited piece from Project A into Prpoject B without going through the process of rendering Project A in order to get another avi file for use in the project?

Thanks for your help. Fred

The problem is that Vegas dumps it's clipboard buffer when you switch to a different project. To get around this, open up two copies of Vegas simultaneously with project A in one and project B in the other. Now you'll be able to copy & paste between them as long as they're both still open.

Thanks very much for this reply. I tried this approach and it worked OK. I would never have thought of doing this!! Is this a program fault do you think? Is there any danger in cutting and pasting between projects in this manner?

Thanks, Fred

I'm not sure if it's a program fault or if it's the designers making the choice that there might potentially be so much data on the clipboard that it could interfere with other programs running when Vegas closes a project. I suppose it would be nice if we were given the choice. Lots of software i use will pop up a dialog box when closing the program or the current file that asks "Retain clipboard data? Yes/No". This is handy because lots of image editing software can accumulate many megabytes of data in the clipboard that you may not need, but sometimes you might want.

There are only a couple of dangers that i can thing of. One is that not everything is copied. Track level settings are generally ignored, but most event level items are copied faithfully. One large exception is the text of text events is lost (or has this been fixed now?). The other danger is that if your track layout differs between the two projects then the result can be rather strange, with Vegas creating new tracks seemingly at random, rather than gracefully figuring out which existing tracks can hold the new pasted information best. This isn't really a problem; it's just a little messy, but you can fix it afterwards if you wish.

I have done it the way Chienworks explained it many times and don't remember running into a problem. The first time I wanted to do it I had to post as well.

There are lots of unintuitive things like that in Vegas, but this forum is one of the main things that makes Vegas so good to work with.
