Cutting out scenes entirely

When I shoot a scene I sometimes just let the camera roll until I get the take I want. In VMS, without rendering, how do I cut out all the scenes that I don't want? I want to shorten a 127 MB file that I import into VMS. If I keep doing what I'm doing, with all the unwanted scenes in so different files, my folder is going to HUGE!

I suppose rendering the scene I want would be OK but do you get any loss of quality by doing that. Hope I'm being clear. Thanks.

By it's very nature I believe a NLE doesn't modify the original source files. I think you could do as you mentioned and cut out what you don't want and render and save to a lossless format what you do want and delete the original files. I believe .avi and .mov are lossless, but check first as I'm not the best at those sort of things. :) Cin

Actually .avi and .mov aren't anything at all. It's what you put inside them that matters, and that can be lossless or not depending on the codec used.

DV .avi files can be rendered to new DV .avi files with no additional loss as they're just copied byte-for-byte. Some folks report some success with MPEG and later versions of Vegas with "lossless rendering".

Probably a better option is to capture only the sections of the tape that are desired to begin with.

If you plan on doing video editing .. you will need HUGE hard drives (more than one) Hard drives are cheaper than they have ever been these days.
