Cutting video... video isn't really gone. Normal?

Hi... recently got Vegas 5.0. Everything has gone pretty smooth thus far except for a few things. Here's one example:

I'm cutting and pastiing a downloaded game trailer for a project I'm working on. I notice that when I highlight and cut parts of the video, they appear to be gone but when I click my mouse on the side of the remaining frame and drag it, the part that I cut is still there. Is this part of the Vegas editing process or is there a step I'm mssing?

Thanks,
Jon

Vegas does not actually cut the video clip. It just keeps track of where to start and end play of the video. If you drag you change the starting or ending points. When you render it will render just the portion of the clip you wanted into final video.

This is called NON-DESTRUCTIVE editing and is normal in most NLE systems.

'normal in most NLE systems'
Actually, interesting point, I'd imagine it'd be quite a bit of work to build an NLE that actually 'cut and threw away' !!
You can achieve that if wanted, sort of, by backing up a project and including used media and the deleting the original files. Never tried it myself, disk space is pretty cheap....
