Dark faces Problem

I shot the school graduation, the stage was well-lit, but after receiving their scrolls, each student took 1 pace forward for 3-4 seconds to receive applause, and of course they were out of the lighted area! Our VX2100 auto-exposure wasn't fast enough to catch up, and the time so short, I couldn't make manual adjustments.
So the overall video is fine except for the face presentation for each of 80 students, probably very important to parents and students alike.
I tried Levels on that part of the clip but the backlight is too strong.
How can I use VMS 8 to improve these moments. Is there some way I could highlight just the face, like you see on TV when they have a circle around a head in a crowd for emphasis?
Help!

Try color curves instead of levels. Color curves allows much more precise control over limited tonal ranges whereas levels pretty much skews the entire range.

To adjust only the faces you can create a mask. Cookie cutter might be able to handle this if you can work with a rectangular shape. Put the video on two tracks, one right below the other. Apply the cookie cutter effect to the upper event with a long narrow rectangle covering the face area. This punches a hole through the the video to expose the track below. Adjust the brightness on the lower event and only that part of the image will show through the upper event and be brightened. Apply some feathering to the cookie cutter to make the effect smoother so it doesn't look like a hard rectangle of light.

If the rectangle doesn't cut it you can create a mask in any photo editor, white everywhere except the faces and black where the faces are, feathered of course. Insert this on a 3rd track above the other two and apply the mask generator effect. This will work the same as the cookie cutter but let you use any arbitrary shape you wish.

Use cookie cutter to isolate the faces and apply more plugins, or use the trial version of Vegas Pro for this project only, in order to be able to use "masks" (so you can mask the faces only).

Another tool I use is 2ndary Color Corrector. Play w/ the Gama, Saturation, Gain and Offset. A litte adjustments go a long way so use sparingly! (;

Also watch the demo video to highlight specific colors:

Chienworks, Eugenia and Byron K.
Thanks for those ideas, I'm trying them now.

Instead of cookie cutter, I used the elliptical gradient mask on the text line, it allowed me to fade the mask in gradually. The faces were so dark that there wasn't much difference between the tools, so I ended up using a brightness/contrast/gamma preset to the average conditions.
Thanks for your help folks, next time we'll get the lighting right!
