The major record company I work for is starting to ask studios for DDP images instead of PMCD's. For many studios, having this feature available in SF would be a major benefit.
Absolutely a requirement that must be met in some way.
ALL major manufacturers are now insisting on this format.
In order for this feature to be properly implemented (not just partially like it is as a plugin in Samplitude and a fixed element in Sequoia), it must include BOTH the write-to-DDP function and a DDP-Import feature so your completed offline could be brought back in from the medium to duplicate a proper reference disk.
Which major dupe shops have changed to DDP only? (forgive me, I do not know)
A quick websearch shows that CD-R and PMCD still appear to be broadly accepted, by the likes of Discmakers, Vaughn, our own www.Sonydadc.com. In fact I didn't find anyone who said DDP only (but I'm sure there are some).
My contact at Sony DAC told me neither CD-R or PMCD is going away because they feel "dropping support for the most common master submission formats would negatively impact business".
All that said, thanks for telling us what you need at the pro level.
I'm sorry EPM, I did not clarify: I was not referring to manufacturing at the duplicators' level, I was referring to manufacturing at the label level... My work does not come from duplicators, I get hired by labels to create masters.
I sent the documentation handed down by the largest Label Group in the music industry to [D*** H***, same as SonyEPM]. If you are curious, I am sure he will be glad to share it with you.
I am not suggesting to drop support or functionality for CD-R or PMCD, I'm just pointing out that the label group for which these formats are considered unacceptable is comprised of a very formidable portion of the music industry. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that this group makes up the largest number of CDs manufactured in the world and they have clearly defined the fact they will no longer accept anything other than a DDP image format.
Let's not drop the PMCD format, let's just implement an import/export DDP function that allows us to continue using the Sony line for mastering our highest income projects.
Well I stopped checking in on this thread as I figured that no one shared my interest....Guess I was wrong.
I work for one of the Big 5 in the US and the preferred format for EMD is DDP images, even if you have to send physical to the plant you can burn the image to a DVD.
I truly hope this feature set makes it in to CDA, as other CD software authoring programs are/have added this feature (GearPro, Sonic Solutions)
The multimedia company I work for has just released its first DVD product consisting of 10 DVD-5 discs, which we're currently replicating in-house.
We're now looking at moving to DVD-9, which we will have to get replicated externally, and every major replicator we've spoken to has insisted on DDP masters for DVD9 replication.
We looked at Sony's CD Architect software as a DVD-9 mastering option, but since it can't presently do DDP masters we'll have to go with another product. I think adding DDP support would make it a much more attractive option.

I was also referring to the labels. I work for EMI Music and I know the company is trying to move studios towards delivering DDPi files instead of PMCD's. I agree with previous posters that DDPi should be an additional feature, not a replacement of PMCD.
