Dealing with different frame rates/formats

Green Button wrote on 6/4/2011, 10:11 PM

I'm shooting with
- vid HD camcorder (MTS),
- Canon S95 (quicktime mov @ 23.976 FPS),
- GoHD Pro (MP4 in AVC -- sometimes at 59.940 fps and sometimes at 1/2 that)

I typically want to put these together in one movie.

I'm looking for advice on how to deal with the frame rates and file types best. Eugenia helped me out in getting Vegas Movie Studio Platinum to not CRASH (yay!) and I've successfully rendered using MainConcept after looking at her blog post here(http://eugenia.queru.com/images/mainconcept1.png)

I've followed the render settings she shows here -- except I tried checking the checkbox "allow source to adjust frame rate" in the theory that the video would change its frame rate as it played (! is that realistic?) and give me the best results.

What I see is REALLY jerky video when showing the S95 (Quicktime 24fps) video.

So:
- anyone have specific advice for best practice in dealing with this?
- what the heck does that "allow source to adjust frame rate" checkbox do? Should I set it or not?

THANK YOU!

You should shoot either in 60i (if your main exporting is for DVDs) or PF30 (if you mostly care about the web) with your camcorder, 30p with the GoHD, and 24p with the S95 (you have no other option). In your mind, you must always pick which camera is your "main" camera. Which one carries the main or most important part of the video. It's that camera's you should match the frame rate of.

Do not shoot in 60p with the GoHD, *unless* you want to slow motion 50% to 30p. Otherwise, if you shoot in 60p with it, and your project properties will be set at 29.97, it will be jerky. The S95 will be jerky anyway at 24p, no matter what.

Never forget to disable resample before you export, no matter what.

Absolutely not. This is an option for users who don't know how to set project settings and who only use footage from a single camera. Since your project is so complex, don't let Vegas make guesses.

Thanks! Two more questions:

- what does "Never forget to disable resample before you export, no matter what." mean? Is this in the Main Concept video dialog?

- the only times I've shot the GoHD at 60fps is when I *do* want to use it for slo-mo. I've been taking the 60-fps clips and "Stretching" them longer in the Vegas MS timeline by doing ctl-drag. Is this the right/best method? Will Vegas use its 'native' frame rate if I do this or should I do something more reliable?

thx

- It's step 3 from the exporting tutorial. It's before you export.

- You need to slow down more accurately. Simply go to properties of the 60p clip in the timeline and change the playback rate to 0.500. That will make it 30p. Then you can resize it, without using the Control key.
