Dealing with different frame rates in one video

WelshJester wrote on 5/21/2019, 2:38 PM

How do people usually deal with different frame rates in one video? I see that most people say to avoid putting 24fps files into 30fps or 60fps project timelines because that 24fps file will add interpolated frames. Also if the project has a higher frame rate than the input video, that video will drop frames. Either way = stutter.

So how come videos on YouTube seem pretty smooth when they use 30fps/60fps of their own footage along with other clips from films etc which are mostly 24fps?

Do people just put anything on the timeline, disable resample and then render with the most common frame rate of video in the project anyway?

I would decide on the frame rate for my final output and convert any non-conforming files to that frame rate before editing using as Lossless a codec as possible.

If the project has a higher framerate than the input, the additional frames will be interpolated in, not dropped.

@WelshJester

This was one of the biggest issues I faced in my editions. But this was solved thanks to the Render Plus tool of HappyOtter Scripts.

The Render Plus tool can change the original frame rate of a video to any other frame rate desired by the user. What's amazing is that Render Plus does not create duplicate frames, because it uses optical flow to interpolate the frames, it creates "real" frames.

More info here:

  • In the video below I used two clips with different frame rates.
  • One has 23.976p fps and the other has 29,970p fps.
  • I used Render Plus to leave the video with 23,976p fps with 29,970p fps.
  • Render Plus perfectly created 1 real frame every 5 frames of the selected video and the video that previously had 23,976p fps now has 29,970p real fps.
  • After this, that both videos got 29,970p fps and it is possible to work on a 29,970p project without there being duplicate frames and without needing to use the Resample of Vegas that is not the best.
