Decoding DV in Vegas' Preview Window

hi there,

i used the microsoft dv codec (qdv.dll - dx 8.0a) for quite some time. it was o.k. to me since i saw the rendering quality of the mainconcept dv-codec (mcdvd_32.dll). rerendering is almost lossless up to the 5th generation!

but after installing the mainconcept codec there appeared a problem:

vegas seems to use the mcdvd_32.dll to decode dv-material for the preview window. before i installed the mainconcept codec, the preview was very tight (exact) in draft-mode - i guess vegas was using the qdv.dll then.
since the mcdvd_32.dll installation, the preview is useless for accurate jobs - even in draft-mode. it seems that decoding dv-files with the mainconcept codec requires more cpu-consumption...

so my question is:
is there a way to "tell" vegas which codec to use for internal dv decoding - while keeping the mainactor codec as a rendering (encoding) option?"

i checked the whole registry - but i.m.h.o. there is no standard decoder to be redefined.
changes in the system.ini just deactivated the mainactor codec (vidc.dvsd=mcdvd_32.dll) - after rem'ing that line vegas took the fast ms dv decoder again, but unfortunately the mainactor codec didn't appear as a render option anymore...

any help is highly appreciated,

fred.

p.s.: sometimes i wonder why my heroes @ sonic foundry rely on the weak ms-dv-codec instead of developping some vegas-customized dv-codec, that renders in a quality similar to the mainactor one....

In Vegas 2 you can use 3rd party DV codecs for rendering, not for decoding in the Vegas preview window. This is mostly for the reason you stated- we found a number of 3rd party codecs we tested do not decode fast enough for full frame rate playback, so the MS decompressor is hardwired in.

Expect some interesting changes in this area in the upcoming Vegas 3.
