Degraded video: Need opinions…

I have been given a number of camcorder videos to do for my sister.

This is composed on VHS-C and 8 MM video cassettes.

The VHS-C video went fine; looks “not that good” like VHS-C does. No problem.

The 8 MM video is another story. Some of it almost looks like “night vision.” Completely washed of all color. The thing is, other clips on the same tape looks just fine. The poor quality video was not shot at night; it was seemingly shot in reasonable light. It looks like it *should* be OK, but it looks horrible. Next clip might be just fine, Then, back to almost night vision looking footage. It is *not* a capture issue. Also, it is not supposed to be “night vision” looking.

Could there be some camcorder setting that was set wrong? The shooters of the video know nothing whatsoever about video. They literally just point and shoot. I believe it was a “Sony 8 MM camcorder.” I (nor they) no nothing else about the camcorder.

I wondered if the video was maybe stored badly (in Florida), but the video is from 2002 and it not all that old.

Could this be a camera setting issue?

Switching to black and white would not be appropriate for this footage.

I know one thing, it made me feel really, really good about my 10 year old video looking so good.

Thanks for any input you may have!

Kent,
Can you post a still or two that we can play with?

When I get home, I'd be glad to.

How/where would I *post* it?

Thanks!

you'd need to post a still image capture or two, on a website you've got access to, such as your business site. You might post them on a private page, and just broadcast the URL to that private page here or on the DMN.

Well...it turns out that she said: "I always wondered what that was for..."

She *did* have the Night Vision turned on for the footage she was taking.

I guess that pretty much answers my questions...

I guess we'll have to settle for daytime "washed out" night vision footage or convert to B&W.

Thank you all very much anyway...

DON'T GIVE UP YET. You can bring back those night vision pics easily
with the color corrector saturation adjustment and brightness contrast, etc. Just because you don't see color doesn't mean it isn't there. Assuming the night vision is accomplished with an ND filter. At least try a small capture and go with it. I have brought back color to almost black and white pictures and just about crapped my pants with the results.

Well...I will certainly take a look at that.

Any reccommendations as far as basic procedures?

If not, that's OK.

Thanks!

Bump...

Kent, if you can't post a still, email it to me and I'll post it for you. JJ is right, if the color is there, you can usually bring a decent semblance back to the image. It won't be perfect, but will certainly be more usable. With color correction and a little noise reduction, you'll be surprised.

Kent, I've saved these to my HD, I'll play with them on the flight. Going to bed now due to early flight schedule.
http://www.vasst.com/not4 release/kentwolf.htm for anyone who wants to play with Kent's color prob. Looks reasonably recoverable at first glance.
