Delay when playing instrument

I have my guitar plugged into the line-in jack and am trying to do some recording. One problem is that when I hit a string, there is a delay between the time I hit the string and the time that it comes out of the speakers. it is not even a full second, but it is not real time and it is annoying. What's going on?

I have a P4 2.00 GHz w/ 512MB RAM @ 333DDR.

What soundcard?

you'll need an ASIO card, and if you lower the latency the delay will decrease. The latency decreases if you lower the buffer in the soundcard's control panel.

Also, if you are going to do live input monitoring, 5 or less msec(256 samples) is best for a real-time feel, with no discernible delay. When using my guitars in Vegas 4 with live input monitoring, I use 256 samples(the sweet spot) with my Delta 66 in ASIO mode and the real-time response is no different than using my external Line 6 POD. I have been using iZotopes Trash amp sim, (better bang for the buck than Amplitube, IHO) with both my Gibson Les Paul and Fender Precision Bass and recording direct into Vegas 4 in real-time(using live input monitoring) with excellent results
and the timing is always spot on. I also use the Nigel amp sim with my UAD-1 (3.01 DX versions) and it works just as well too. What version of Vegas are you using? Remember, the live input monitoring and ASIO features are only available in Vegas 4.
If you are using Vegas 4 with a quality ASIO card (forget the game cards) at 256 samples (5msec) or less, you should not have a problem getting real-time response when using the live input feature.
