Zippy,
Ego has nothing to do with it. It's basic math. To most musicians, 16 bit/44.1K has always been poor. Which is why the standard has moved to 24 bit/96K and higher. Even DV has a higher sampling rate, because most folks don't like the crappy 32K sound. Windows Media does a better job, for pete's sake. It's on the camera for emergencies and low-quality productions. No one doing professional work uses this feature, and it's not found on a single high end camera. Canon and low end JVC's feature this, and consumer grade Sony's as well.
Good lord, how did ego enter a discussion that is related to quality, determined by basic math? I thought the whole purpose of having better gear is to have a better quality finished product, no? For me, it sure is. And ears are a hundred times more sensitive than eyes. Ears will hear the garbage long before the eyes see it.
Sony BVW 400A, BVV5 dockable, BVW 50 SP portable, and the BetaSX DNV 5 do, the latter if equipped with some hideously expensive optional card or adapter. I reckon we run a fairly professional level facility with BetaSX, DVCAM and AVIDs but there aren't many times I need to record 4 audio tracks. If we shoot performanaces there is a guy on the audio board mixing down to stereo. Bored with encouraging the zipper head but unless s/he is shooting BetaSP or SX with four mics going, can't see a need to capture four channels at once. There are times when the four channels come in handy, about once a year.
Alright, consider me corrected that some of the high end cams do 4 channel, but are they 32k/12 bit? I knew some of the old Betacams do 12bit 4 channel, but didn't know the SX cams did it. My bad.
"By the way, what exactly constitutes professionalism?"
Not acting like you do.
A "professional" wouldn't:
1. use all caps when posting
2. scream bug, bug, everywhere a bug
3. nitpick to the nth degree nearly in every post he makes
A "professional" would
1. politely ask for help as oppossed to endless ranting ad nauseam
2. save his work every few minutes, because s... happens
3. accept much of what he complained about was due in fact to his own sloopy work habits
Zippy, if I'm reading between the lines correctly and you're trying to be accepted as one of the guys, stop trying so hard and stop being so critical of Vegas.
Its like when your wife asks, 'honey how do I look in this dress?; You smiile and say fine even if she doesn't. Trust me, if she has a butt that sticks out and should have a sign saying 'wide load' that's not what she wants to hear. She knows already. In a way that's what you keep doing Zippy. You keep pointing out little warts most of know Vegas has. WE KNOW ALREADY! We don't need to be reminded.
Agreed,
no pro in their right mind is going to try to work with 12/32K audio however as a capture format it should be fine, once you got it into VV / SF upsample it to 16/48 or 24/96 before touching and it should be fine.
I've never done this so I'll have to defer to the pros as to how well this would work but it does seema viable way to record 'surround'.
Even though VV will not capture it in one pass I think with a little imagination you could still get it in, most VCRs will let you select 1&2 or 3&4, so with two passes you can get all four tracks into VV.
"By the way, what exactly what constitutes "professionalism". What is it's criteria?"
Well, Zippy, let me first explain something -- video editing is something I'm teaching myself as a break from my REAL work, which is programming. I am a professional programmer; I have to deal with clients, get the work done effectively and efficiently, and keep learning my trade.
I've had customers like you. They'd give me some of the requirements for the project, then heap abuse on me and the other developers on the team because we didn't read their minds to derive the other half. I've been yelled at for asking questions that were absolutely necessary for completing the job -- in their minds I should have known what was needed.
I've gotten "bug reports" that consisted of "IT DOESN'T WORK" with no explanation. Sometimes those "bugs" were cases where the user asked for A, then expected B.
Their expectations were unreasonable. Their means of communication were unreasonable, rude, and, yes, unprofessional.
"Professional" means you act like an adult, try to communicate clearly, don't insult people, and CERTAINLY don't spit in the face of people who GIVE you things for free. It means you treat people the way you expect to be treated. It means you take pride and care in your work and in how you work with others.
It means you take correction gracefully, acknowledge when you're wrong, and don't insist on everything being your way.
I get the impression you're trying to make money on editing video using Vegas. I wish you luck, and I want you to realize that you're alienating one of your best resources, this forum.
>I've just never had to kiss up to people (especially in a hokey cyber society) in order to feel like I belong.
Is there some kind of "society" where you feel like you do belong? Some group where the people actually seem to enjoy your company and want to hear what you have to say?
