Deleted Vegas files still take up HD space

snicholshms wrote on 9/19/2005, 11:26 AM
Whenever a Vegas file (say 40 GB) is deleted my PC does not reflect the space on the hard drive as available.
In other words... on a 120 GB HD there could be a 40 GB AVI leaving 80GB of space on the drive. If the 40GB AVI file is deleted the HD still shows only 80 GB as available!
So I have to reformat the drive to get the 40GB of space back!
How can I set the PC to reflect (or update) the new available space?
Intel P4, 3.2GHz HT, 2GB RAM.

Do you have Norton utilities installed?

IF so, it has a Protected Recycle that you have to work around.

Are you running Norton Utilities?
If so, remember to delete "Norton Protected Files" (or something to that effect) in addition to clearing out the regular Recycle bin.

A file of that size is likely too big for the Windows recycle bin and on delete he should give a confirmation to that effect. Likely some form of alternative safety protection. Look at what background utilities are running on your machine as formating a HD as an alternative to using file delete is a bit drastic.

Hit SHIFT+Delete and it will permanetly delete the file without sending it to the recycle bin.

As others have mentioned, Norton's protected recycle bin could be causing this -- Shift-Delete will appear to delete files, but Norton works silently to prevent them from being permanently deleted from the system. If this is Norton's doing, it can be undone by right clicking the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, and selecting "Empty Norton Protected Files."

After this is done, the disc space will be reclaimed.

Don't forget that the Vegas file (.veg) is relativly small compared to the media that is used within it. To recover all the space make sure you are deleting the media as well.

Thanks all for the ideas. What background utilities could there be on the system? I haven't installed anything other than Norton 2002.

Well, as everyone's said: Norton. Did you delete the protected files?

I forgot all about the "Protected Files'! I turned that feature off for Drive D (Video) and that solved the problem.

Thanks for the reminders on this.
