Deleting Media Files

mrs_smiths_lad wrote on 6/25/2004, 9:46 AM
Whilst experimenting with my little project I ended up with a .mpg file that I used as dropped in media. This file was large and I also had the same stuff as 1 gig .avi files, (Sequencial making up same content) I replaced the mpg with the avi files to simplify editing make more managable. When I deleted the mpg file Vegas looks for it in the project on startup even though it is not used. I've saved the project without the mpg file in it didn't help. What am I doing wrong this time?

Go to Tools and clear the media pool. This will remove all references to unused media.

This will also remove anything from the media pool that you're not using but might still want to use. If you want to do a safer cleanup, scroll through the media pool to find that MPEG file and delete it from there.

You didn’t remove it from the media pool. Vegas remembers everything you ever dropped on the timeline in its media pool in case you need it again. Go to the Media Pool tab, find the MPG file and right-click and select Remove from project. Alternately you can clean the media pool which will remove all unused media from the pool. (it’s the left most icon at the top of the media pool. In Vegas 4 it was a broom and in Vegas 5 it’s a lightning bolt). Don’t forget to save the project to make the changes permanent.

Thanks guys, I need to explore this program more completly I have never looked in the media pool before. I hate reading instructions, a good program is intuative so I shouldn't have to... I wish

Me too, that’s why I bought Spot’s Vegas Workshop Training DVD. Just sit back and listen and be amazed.

Well... one man’s intuitive interface is another man’s blank screen. ;-)

Spot is the handle (user ID) of Douglas Spotted Eagle, in this forum. He has made a very useful DVD tutorial on using Vegas 5. I recently received mine in the mail and have just begun to check it out,......looks very good, indeed!

Sorry for assuming everyone knew Spot. The Link that Roxy11 provided to Vegas FASST is not the DVD I was referring to. That DVD is for people who already know Vegas 4 and just want to learn what’s new in Vegas 5. If you are a beginner that is not the place to start.

I was referring to the Vegas 4.0 - Editing Workshop (4 DVD Set) by Douglas Spotted Eagle. You can read about it here. While it was written for Vegas 4, it is still 95% relevant to Vegas 5 (only track compositing has changed a bit) and very useful for its intended audience. I highly recommend it.

There is a new version coming out for Vegas 5 soon so you might want to wait bit and get that. Keep an eye on the VASST Training DVD site.

I've got to recommend Gary Kliener's 2 DVD set also. I've been using VV for several versions and he still taught me quite a bit. Very useful in seeing how use of a tool fits in the workflow and not just an academic description of the tool like in some manuals/videos.

It's oriented at VV4 but I think he's updating it as we speak. Almost every second of the entire three hours of instruction is useful toward learning VV5, the new one will just add on the new capabilities.
