I believe that the red X is the watermark. Not sure about the black frames, though.

The watermark used to be black frames with SONIC FOUNDRY writen on it. sounds like Sony changed that.

Exactly. From what I remember whatever you would encode with VV would render with black frames every so often with the SoFo logo. I can't say about capture as I was not using VV for capture. But the Red X was not somehting that SoFo was using, maybe Sony did change this or maybe you are using another demo plug-in that is doing the Red X.

I've seen some footage SPOT did with a beta version that had the rd X in it, if that helps.
