Device Not Available

For some unknown reason I am getting "device not available" on Vegas with my Sony HDR HC3 camcorder. I checked setting on camera and program, and it appears to be the same as before. I have not had a problem before. I did update to latest vegas 7.0e version and latest directx 9.0c version. I am starting to suspect it might be something to do with Windows but I cannot find the connection. I went so far as to system restore earlier but it didn't make a difference. My friend also seems to have the same problem all of a sudden. Very strange. Any suggestions.

You may have already tried this, but I got the same message in V8 and all I did was close the capture window and re-open it and it was fine.

I twice was called to give support to a similar problem and twice the issue was bound to a firewire problem. Though other applications and other devices worked fine, one particular camera was refused from Vegas, but not always. It sometimes worked for a while and then again it didn't.
In the first case installing a different firewire card with a different chip set helped. In the second case reinstalling the firewire driver helped.

I have still not found a solution to my problem. Firewire is on the motherboard. Downloaded most recent driver for motherboard. Tested the motherboard. It's fine. Between XP & Vegas is the problem. No new chipset driver fort he TI either. I still think it has something to do with XP but I can't identify the problem.

Can you capture with other software, f.ex. HDVsplit?

Yeah, try that first, since it's free and will take all of 5 minutes to set up.

If you still have problems, get another cable. I've found a firewire cable can have a finite life, usually from contact wear/misadjustment at the 4-pin end.
