Did I mention that I was a moron?

OK, here's an interesting dilemma...

I taped my daughter's entire volleyball season and now I need to give the highlights to her coach, so he can assemble a "best of" show. He wanted some footage, so I assembled about 18 minutes of 5-10 second clips in a Vegas project, and then rendered the HD footage to an AVI. Well, the result was 84GB in size...so that's no good. So I then just rendered it to an MPEG-2, and that's where the problem started as I can't seem to burn it to a DVD without Mr. Gate's fine product thinking I am trying to burn a movie.

So I either need to render it to some other format that I can provide on a DVD as a data disk, or find a way to make a data DVD disk, and simply put the file on it. Windows will not let me just burn a data disk with the file on it. And it won't even let me format a blank Sony DVD. It fails.

Anyone have any ideas? I could sure use some right about now, as I need to give this to him tomorrow morning...

TIA.

TB

Download the free trial of Nero and it will allow you to do what you want.

Can you package the MPEG-2 in an uncompressed ZIP file? You don't really need to compress it. If you can package it in a zip container, then you can probably burn it to DVD.

I know that 7-zip (free zip utility) has an uncompressed option called "Store". [At least I assume it's uncompressed, because it seems not to affect file size at all.]

I am trying the zip-file thing now, but may not have luck. But GREAT idea about Nero 6 Jeremy...I hadn't thought that. Actually, I didn't know there was a free version to be honest. I haven't ever looked at it, but will do so if the zip thing doesn't work.

Thanks guys.

EDIT: OK, I downloaded Nero 6, but there's still the issue of a serial number. I don't have one. I think I'll try to download a trial of the latest version. As it is now, I would be better off just letting my daughter take my 8GB zip drive to school and having the coach transfer it off of there. It's only a 1.7GB file.

Or, I could try my Linux partition. Hmmm...That just might work. Interesting.

any reason to not PTT & give the minidv to the coach?

This IS the BEST & CHEAPEST option. You will have your .zip drive back by the time you get home from work and the coach will have the files.

Yes, that's the way I am going to go...just let her take the zip drive to school and have him transfer the file. He has a laptop and can just transfer it that way.

The other thing we'll do if this doesn't meet his needs (because I had to render it into one file, with 4-5 seconds of space between clips), is to transfer the original media files (AVCHD & HDV) with my .veg file to an external hard drive with Vegas 8c trial version on it. He can simply load Vegas (he uses PP), open the .veg file and have access to all the media at full bitrate. He'll then be able to transfer the files to his machine and do whatever he wants with them.

While this has been a bit of an exercise in futility, it's also been a bit of a learning experience--I would've thought that you could simply make a data disk DVD with an MPEG2 file on it, but apparently not in Windows. I am not sure how much Nero costs, but it might be worth buying if the cost wasn't too bad. At least I would have an alternative to the Windows disk burning utility.

I think you can just change the extension of the mpg file to something like .doc or .jpg or .txt, etc. etc. and Windows should be fooled. I haven't tried it as I haven't needed to, but it works most of the time with email if I need to send a file that the receiving end has blocked.

Why not upload the video to Vimeo and let him download it?

You only get 500mb a week for upload.

Right...upload limits. Same reason I couldn't do it via Yousendit. This will work--the zip drive method. It's certainly straightforward. But I can't believe that Windows won't allow me to use a DVD to make a data disk! That's ridiculous. I tried it in both XP Pro and Vista Home Premium. If I had access to a different machine I'd have Ubuntu available, and bet I could burn it. But given the limitations I have to work with tonight at home, the flash drive is the best way to go.

I sure appreciate all the tips though guys--very helpful to hear some other options, and it's good to know that I just *might* not be as much of a moron as I first thought...lol.

Nero. Here's an ideal for large amount of sports video for quick reviews. Split up the screen into four/six. or eight min viewing screens that the coach can quickly scan all at ounce , put date, time index on each mini screen and create groupings for sub menus. This permits easy reviewing of larges amount of game video and a small Mpeg2 file vs original videos.

If you buy the retail pack of just about any DVD burner it'll come with a crippled copy of Nero that only works with that drive. Good enough to burn a DVD data disk though. I'd suggest checking the box your DVD burner came in, unless you bought an OEM one you'll likely find the software you need in the box.

I blew off Nero a couple of years ago for the same reason that I stopped using Symantec/Norton products; massive bloatware that gets its hooks into pretty much all parts of a computer. In its place, I have been using an amazing piece of freeware called "ImgBurn."

I was going to recommend CDBurnerXP Pro yesterday but when I looked up the URL there were a bunch of stupid "Yes on 8" ads on the guy's page.

Had a bit of back and forth with him today asking about that and he said it's all Google ad rotators that he doesn't control (and he's in Sweden, not CA)

Anyway, it's a free program and would certainly make a data DVD without trying to outsmart you.
