From HELP file

Scene/Chapter Markers
Scene/chapter markers are used when you add scene selection menus to your projects.

Using the Timeline window, you can place scene/chapter markers in your video file for viewers to use as navigation points. The scene/chapter markers allow you to move to certain portions of the video and begin playback. You can also use scene/chapter markers to automatically create scene selection menus and link to scene/chapter markers with end actions.

Chapter Markers
Chapter markers are used to denote different sections of your project. You can place chapter markers in your video file for viewers to use as navigation points to skip through the project. You can also use chapter markers to manually create scene selection menus and link to chapter markers with end actions.

So basically the difference is that the scene selection will contain the scene markers, but you can have several more chapter markers.

For instance a meeting or presentation with a following Q&A session, you can place a single scene marker for each section and at the beginning of the Q&A session, and then chapter marks on each question, without overloading the scene selection menu.

The difference is confusing, but not complicated. Too bad the help system doesn't make it easy to understand.

Here's the easy answer: during playback, there is no difference whatsoever. The ONLY difference is that the "Scene/Chapter" marker is used by the "Insert Scene Selection Menu" function within DVD Architect; the Chapter markers are ignored by this function.

That's it.

It was an interesting idea, but one that really isn't of much use practically speaking and can actually get you into big trouble. The reason is that DVD Architect has always contained a flaw -- one that I complained about loudly back in versions 1 & 2, and which was never changed -- and that flaw is that when you add or delete chapter markers, your references in various menus to the existing chapter markers that existed prior to adding additional markers are all changed!! This is always the wrong thing to do, but that's the way DVDA works. The reason I bring this up in this context is that, once you understand the difference between Chapter/Scene markers and Chapter markers, you might be tempted to add additional chapter markers once you have created your scene selection menu. Unfortunately, as I point out above, they are identical in every respect to Scene Chapter Markers, and therefore once you add them, every menu chapter item that points to chapter stops after the one(s) you just added will now be pointing to a different point on the timeline.

But, back to the main point: the two types of chapter points are identical, except that the first one is used by the Insert Scene Selection Menu option within DVD Architect. That is the only difference.

The workaround to John's detailed paragraph (and I hate that behavior in DVDA too!) is to make sure I've got everything right in Vegas and not second-guess myself in DVDA. And if I do, I just start a new project. It is far too time-consuming to undo all the scrambled chapter menu points resulting from adding or deleting markers after the fact in DVDA.

I too wish they would have fixed this a long time ago.

If I understand the explanation about mixed up chapter/scene markers when adding some in between others added earlier:

This should not be a problem if using them only as Chapter Markers? Since you're just skipping through the feature sequentially and not trying to jump to a certain portion from a menu?

Thanks for all the information!

Makes sense now and I see that I too would like everything automatically updated if the markers are modified.
