DirectX 8.0 and Win2k

I know I should probably be asking this at Microsofts website, but I would have to spend 2 hours just trying to figure out where to post a message for some tech support.

I went to upgrade to DirectX 8.0a on my Win2k Pro machine so that I could upgrade to the latest version of Vegas Video. When I went to install the directX8 it gives me the message "cannot be installed on Win NT." DirectX 8, says it is supported under win2k right? Why does it think I'm running Windows NT?

I made a mistake just like this with the same error message. There are 2 separate downloads ( in very fine print that is almost hidden ). One is for win98 me and the other is for win2k. Hopefully thats the problem.
