DirectX 9.0a won't play MPEG1 files?

I installed DirectX 9.0a on my XP Pro machine last night. All my *.wmv files still play fine, but when I try to play an MPEG1 file, the playback is jerky and Windows Media Player wants to play the file at about 400% of the rendered size. These files played fine with DirectX 8.1 installed.

Anybody else have problems after installing DirectX 9.0a or have a fix? BTW, DVDs play fine as do DV files within Vegas.

Thanks,

Dan

It's not just you. I have the same problem on Win98SE. I was unable to figure why so I uninstalled version 9.

The MS website says that you can't uninstall DX v9.x so how did you do it without wrecking your system? Also, I was just about to install it myself so now I won't.

You have to use RESTORE, which takes you to a previous restore point on ME or XP.

I uninstalled it from control panel. I did not see the note that it would crash your system. Everything seems to be working the same as it was before. The only problem I have is I cannot play wmv files which is why I tried DirectX 9.0.

I solved this problem by going into WMP9->Tools->Options->Advanced and UNCHECKING "Use Video Mixing Renderer." After that, my MPEG1 files play fine in WMP9. I believe when you do this it forces video playback in overlay mode, rather than using DX9 DirectShow (I could be wrong). The VMR in DX9 supposedly plays MPEG files differently than did the VMR for DX7 or DX8.

Microsoft's Windows Media forum suggested re-installing WMP9, which I did NOT do.

I followed Microsoft's advice and created a System Restore point BEFORE installing DX9 so I can revert at any time.
