DirectX Media 6.0 Runtime

Is it necessary to install directx media 6.0 runtime?
Everytime I try to install it I get an unspecified error--
I'm using a demo version, but otherwise I meet the system
requirements. What's it for, anyway?

DirectX Media 6.0 Runtime is essential for Vegas users.
