However, MY problem is that I can never get the high quality MP3 that I want.

You got it on one John! And that's what we have been "skirting" around. The Template format says 48khz but the truth of it is that we can't select it. And yes I DO have and paid for the PRO version DivX.

We got there . . .

Grazie

Managing User Expectation:

# Template says 48khtz but we can't get at it to select it. Fine! ( "Computer says . . . . no . . ")

But Grazie, that is the description entered for DV AVI (and it shows pcm at that rate), not DivX. I think you know this, but for the benefit of the others, if you choose to save your own custom template, you can add whatever description you like.

John Meyer, in his screenshots, just started with the template listed and customized from that.

The only way to get higher mp3 audio bitrates is to install and use the http://lame.sourceforge.net/lame mp3 codec[/link]. This will give you access to the higher mp3 bit rates and works quite well with other software like Traction and VDub. The only problem is that I can't seem to make it work when combining video with mp3 audio in Vegas.

Yes jrazz, I know that, it is a "sample" template. But KNOWING what I want - 48khz - I SHOULD be able to select it from the Audio drop down, select and THEN make my own rolled-my-own template. JM can't customise from the dropdown to GET the 48khz, something wont allow it to be "revealed" and then selected. If he could, THEN he/you/we could then add our own comments as an explanation. Not being able to select what is needed is kinda screwy?

Now, Laurence explains what the difficulty he has had in attempting to get to 48khz. The whole thing IS "Lame" !

John Meyer, in his screenshots, just started with the template listed and customized from that.That is correct. I realized after I posted that I had forgotten to change the template name and description. Thanks for catching that.

Also I did some research last night, and Laurence's solution is correct: you have to install a third-party MP3 encoder, and then you can get the "pro" settings for MP3.

I have to say that is sure seems odd that, given that I have Vegas, Sound Forge, and several other apps which provide MP3 encoding, that none of them can find their way into the audio codec selections in Vegas.

Understanding the Expectations of Users:

# User has full range of MP3 CODEC but this does NOT appear in the audio codec selections in Vegas.

And I also have Sound Forge and Vegas, which provide MP3 encoding at higher bit rates than the pulldown shows in John Meyer's screen shots, and all I get is "format is not supported" in that pulldown on my installation.

I'll try installing the lame mp3 from the link above, but I'm skeptical that it'll do any good. My best guess is that the Windows registry does not have the necessary entries in a place Vegas can find them so it can present the list of options in the pulldown.

The registry keys shown as rendering formats for Vegas appear to be in under these keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{33D9A760-90C8-11D0-BD43-00A0C911CE86}

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3862069064-3701892371-377755805-1000\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{33D9A760-90C8-11D0-BD43-00A0C911CE86}

No MP3 keys there, though.

The Lame MP3 idea was suggested in either the DMS or the Creative Cow forums. Google it and you may find some instructions on what needs to be done.

Johnmeyer, are you saying that installing LAME solved all your problems, and now you can successfully create DivX from Vegas with MP3 audio like 128 kb/s at 44,100?

What exactly did YOU do? I looked at the LAME web page. It has links to everywhere, but you can only download source code from it.

PS: I googled "DMS" and got 16,200,000 hits. Nothing looked too much like what we're talking about. ;-)

Sorry to butt in here but (but!), I DO have MP3 and 48k in SF. Why does this NOT appear within Vegas under the conditions of the DivX CODEC call-out? Why should I ever NEED to install "Lame" to do it?

And that's, I think, the point being raised here?

I agree, Grazie, that's the point. Now, does anyone have the answer?!?
