Do project settings affect render settings?

Hi, I realize that project settings will affect the actual editing process. My question is, do project settings affect the render, or do the render settings "overwrite" the project settings and draw from the original media? As a simple example, say I have media at 60 fps and render at 60 fps. Will the render be affected if the project was set at 30 fps vs 60 fps?

Good Question!

There are actually two models at work, the legacy and the newer "smart" functions in recent versions.

They are not explained extremely well in your Vegas Help menu.

 • Traditional (legacy) Project Settings include everything marked above the
line. For conventional "unsmart" processing and rendering, they affect the Preview display, but not the Render. This began to change with VP14 I believe.
 • Now, if we look at the Properties below the
, we find there are two "Smart" filter options -- they are Smart Adaptive Interlace and Smart Resample, which uses optical flow.
 • In order to use either of these "Smart" filters, we must adapt the Project Properties to match the output. For instance, set Field Order to Progressive for interlaced source, and set the new frame rate in the box.
 • Most of the items below the
affect the rendered file, contingent on other settings, especially in 32 bit float projects.
 • In addition, some AI Effects require appropriate changes to Project Properties in order to work right. These include Vegas Upscale (set the output resolution), and perhaps others.

There are more wrinkles, but this should get you started. I know consolidation of these project features is being addressed along with other priorities.

Thank you. Please clarify, what is the
line? Second question, in versions of Vegas after 14, will the traditional project settings affect the render?

1. In common HTML,
means literally "Horizontal Rule," in other words a horizontal line.

________________________________________________

That is a horizontal rule. It appears in the project properties to separate the sections.

2. As I said it depends. In Magix versions (14+), the legacy project settings, specifically Resolution, Frame Rate, Field Order, Pixel Aspect:

 • Do not necessarily affect the render in Legacy environments, which means no Smart Deinterlace or Smart Resampling Filters, no AI Upscale, no 32 bit project settings. There may be others. They are generally set to match the source, or the output in mixed media projects.
 • Do affect the render in 32 bit Projects, or Projects with Smart Deinterlace, Smart Resample, or Upscale (AI) enabled. When using these filters we are told to match the output.

I know it sounds a bit messy, and the development team is aware of the dissociation, especially for us older users.

However, I think it is difficult for them to implement new pre-pan/crop, media, or output filters in the new tech era without treading on this once-pristine real estate, which was a unique feature of pre-acquisition Vegas, (and which certainly came with its own set of quirks!)

Thank you for clarifying.
