Does anyone know...

Does anyone know specifically what triggers Vegas to use the Sony M2T decoder vs. the Main Concept decoder for HDV clips? There must be something in the file's header.

HDV files captured or generated in Vegas use the Sony decoder and will smartrender. Files captured with HDVsplit, for example, are handled by the Main Concept decoder and don't seem to smartrender. I wonder if there's some way to trick Vegas into using the Sony M2T decoder?

Makes sense the header info could trigger the decoder or is it the file extension?
Can you debug the header of the two files and compare? That's always such fun.
But -- I thought you could rename an M2T file to MPG and vice versa. Might be a bad assumption on my part but if it's called the Sony M2T decorder I'd assume it decodes M2T files and you could fool it by renaming. Bad assumption?

like i keep saying,
the encoder shouldnt care what MPG encode it came frm, it should however give us the option of activating smartrender during the final encode stage, in turn, VBR irrespective of teh settings, will smartrender. As ti stands, VBR smartrender is still flaky...

i hasten to guess how XDCamEX at 35VBR would fare with smartrendering
