Does frameserving with CCE Basic and 2-pass VBR work with Vegas?

This question is spawned from the recent MPEG2 encoder testing.

I was checking to see if CCE Basic could be used with Satish's Frameserving plugin last night. I created the "signpost" file and, indeed was able to start the render in CCE Basic (latest demo version) via frameserving. However, after the first pass, CCE Basic just froze. The only box to click on was cancel, but that didn't work; I actually had to "end task".

This was late last night and I just had to go to bed, but I was wondering if anyone else has successfully frameserved from the Vegas timeline to CCE Basic using Satish's plugin AND, especially, 2-pass VBR?

Thanks,

Dan (a newbie to frameserving)

Yes, it does, as best as I can recollect. Yes, now I remember, it works in 2-pass CBR and not 2-pass VBR.

It works and it doesn't matter how many passes CBR or VBR, just dont process the audio with CCE.As I said do a research about CCE before using it. Doom9.org is your starting point.

Just double checking you made sure and check "Write audio as PCM samples in signpost avi"?

I have done frameserving to the standalone Mainconcept encoder, and when I set that encoder to do 2-pass encoding, everything works OK. Therefore, I know that Satish's frameserver is capable of handling the request to go back to the beginning and start serving the frames again from the beginning.

I tried this again tonight. If you don't render the audio, CCE Basic can be "frameserved" to render in 2-pass VBR mode with no other changes.

If you want to also render the audio and do a 2-pass render, you must check the "Write audio as PCM samples in signpost AVI".

Both cases worked. However, after having done a 2-pass WITH audio, and then trying to view the resulting MPEG file, a message keeps popping up:
"PluginPac Frameserver is not serving. Check Again? (Yes or NO). Had to reboot to get rid of it.

Hmm, you would normally only get that if you were trying to play the signpost file without frameserver running. I don't see how playing the mpg could do this. You might want to double check which you were playing.

I retraced my steps: To be more specific and accurate: I would get that message when I opened up Windows Explorer and clicked on the folder that held the signpost avi files (not the rendered mpeg files). I wasn't trying to play anything, just examining the contents of the folder. The frameserver has been stopped from within Vegas and it doesn't matter if Vegas is closed or open.

Any ideas why this is happening? (no apps or related processes - that I can see - are running when I go to the folder; I just click on the folder that holds the signpost avi files and the message pops up...)

My guess would be that Windows is trying to take a peek at the file content to figure out what they are. You don't happen to have "thumbnails" selected for the viewing mode of the folder do you?

Good call. As a matter of fact, I was in "Thumbnail" view mode. I'm at work now, but I'll switch to "Details" mode when I get home and see if that makes a difference.

Edit later today: Yep, you were right. The message doesn't come up when I'm in "Detai" view mode.

Thanks for the solution,
Dan
