Does Smart Render actually work?

I have both VP 8 and 9. I want to correct a mistake in a rendered DVD so I did the following as quoted from an earlier post:

1. Open the project file.
2. Put a new video track on top, and in this place the rendered MPEG-2 file. You have to
make sure its lined up exactly! .
3. When you come to a spot that needs changing, trim out the middle of the MPEG-2
file, then make any changes on the tracks under that (on the original clips).
4. Make sure everything after the changes is still lined up correctly!
5. When you go to render, Vegas will only have to render out the parts that are
changed. Everything else should say "no recompression required."

I did the above, but both VP 8 and 9 just re-render the whole file again. Is there a setting I have to turn or something?

Sorry, I meant render, but I can't seem to correct the heading

Read the Vegas help under "render" .. I think you'll find that no recompress or smart render does not apply to MPG. Here's what I found:

When you render video to any of the following formats, unedited video frames are passed through without recompression:
• DV AVI
• DV MXF
• IMX MXF (IMX 24p MXF is not supported for no-recompress rendering)
• HD MXF
• HDV
In order to perform rendering without recompression, the width, height, frame rate, field order, and bit rate of the source media, project settings, and rendering template must match. Frames that have effects, compositing, or transitions applied will be rendered.

You can clear the Enable no-recompress long-GOP rendering check box on the General tab of the Preferences dialog to turn the feature off.

Well, that means its a waste of time as a feature doesn't it? We are render to Mpg2 for DVD burning, and with the slow preview rate in Vegas, I find it hard to pick up mistakes as I lose the flow. So I imported the rendered file into DVDA to check it out and found the mistake. The mistake is only about 15 seconds long, so I have to face another 4-5 hour render just because Smart Render wont work. Is there any other way to fix without using Smart Render?

Excuse me, Smart Rendering MPEG-2 from DVD source works perfectly in Vegas Pro 8.
I have done hundreds of hours just this past year.

In order for it to do so, you must set the render properties precisely the same as the source video, including size, frame rate, PAR, field order, maximum bitrate, average bitrate -- just the same as smart rendering from any other supported source format. It will not work using double pass for obvious reasons. Using MediaInfo to get this data will save you considerable time and enable you to smart render first time, every time with absolutely no guesswork whatsoever. Again, as the PP suggested, read the directions.

OK, I stand corrected. Im just a learner still finding out what to do. I've looked up the points you mention, downloaded MediaInfo, but am still confused about what to set where.
Would you be interested in giving me a step by step please?

The critical settings were listed in my previous post -- size, frame rate, PAR, field order, maximum bitrate, average bitrate.

Set these exactly the same in your custom render properties as your media properties and it will most likely work.

I usually correct this sort of thing with the tools Mpeg Wizard and Mpeg VCR from womble.com. What I do is assemble the edit the Vobs from the DVD with Mpeg Wizard, then separate the mpeg2 video from the AC3 video using Mpeg VCR, then author with the edited mpeg and AC3 files using DVD Architect. I believe you can losslessly edit the mpeg2 video in Vegas, but you have to render an extra generation of audio.

Al,
Did you use the DVDA presets to render out of Vegas? There are four there, and if you chose the wrong one either the first or second time, that could be the problem.
Only saying that cause someone I know (not me of course! ;) ) has had that problem before!
