Downsizing a video file for a website with only 10mbs..

to work with.
I need the best quality I can get for a vid file for my website.
I have only 10mbs left to use and the file is sitting as an avi with a length of 3 mins.
What does everyone suggest to use as far as settings in Vegas Vid to squeeze but to look good at same time.
56k and cable modem speeds are being looked at here.
I beg for any help on this.
Thank you to all.
David

David, i presume by "10mbs" you mean 10 megabytes. Is that correct?

I would suggest rendering your video to Windows Media at the 256Kbps setting, click custom and in the Video tab slide the quality setting all the way to the right, and check 2 pass encoding. These settings result in a file that is usually about 2MB/minute and can be played quite nicely over a cable or DSL connection. Dialup users will have to download the file to their hard drive first.

Using a bitrate lower than 256Kbps will drastically reduce the quality of the video, but going higher than 256 makes the file size much larger with only small gains in quality. 256 seems to be a good compromise. You can take a look at http://www.vegasusers.com/vidshare/ to see some samples that other VideoFactory & Vegas users have produced. Note that most of the files with listed bitrates in the 400 - 800 range were actually encoded at 256, however using 2 pass encoding allows the file to look like a higher bitrate was used while conserving bits where they are not needed, so the rate listed is the maximum rather than the average (at least i'm guessing that's what it is ... i just type in the number that Media Player shows me, but i know i've encoded my files at 256 and rates of 525 often show up)
